History
The 1971 United States Proof Set was produced by the U.S. Mint in San Francisco and contains five coins: Lincoln cent, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, Washington quarter, and Kennedy half dollar. All coins bear the 'S' mint mark and were struck with specially polished dies on polished planchets to create mirror-like surfaces and frosted design elements. This was the first year the Kennedy half dollar was struck only in copper-nickel clad composition for circulation and proof sets, marking the end of the 40% silver half dollars that had been produced from 1965-1970. The set represents an important transition period in American coinage history. Proof sets from this era appeal to coin collectors, numismatists, and those interested in American monetary history. The 1971 set is particularly valued by collectors building complete runs of annual proof sets or those focusing on Kennedy half dollar varieties. While not rare with a mintage of over 3 million sets, these proof sets remain popular for their superior strike quality and historical significance as everyday examples of American craftsmanship in coin production.
