Bronze Lincoln Wheat Penny with possible mint error
History
The Lincoln Wheat Penny was minted from 1909 to 1958, designed by Victor David Brenner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. These coins were struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) and feature Lincoln's profile on the obverse and two wheat stalks on the reverse. The coin shown appears to be from the 1950s era based on the visible design elements and patina. Lincoln Wheat Pennies are highly collectible among numismatists, particularly those with mint errors or unusual characteristics. Error coins, such as off-center strikes, doubled dies, or unusual letter positioning, can command premium prices among collectors who specialize in mint varieties and anomalies. The wheat penny series remains one of the most accessible and popular areas of coin collecting, appealing to both beginning and advanced numismatists for its historical significance and variety of collectible errors.
