History

This Canadian silver dollar was minted in 1966 as part of Canada's regular circulation coinage during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The coin features Arnold Machin's effigy of the young Queen on the obverse and Emanuel Hahn's iconic 'Voyageur' design on the reverse, depicting a fur trader and Indigenous guide paddling a canoe. These coins were struck in 80% silver and were among the last silver dollars produced for general circulation in Canada before the transition to nickel composition in 1968. Canadian silver dollars from the 1960s are highly sought after by numismatists and collectors of Commonwealth coinage. The 1966 issue is particularly interesting to collectors because it exists in two varieties: small beads and large beads along the rim, with the small beads variety being scarcer. These coins appeal to both silver stackers for their precious metal content and to historical collectors who appreciate Canada's numismatic heritage and the artistry of mid-20th century coinage design.
