History

The Jefferson Nickel was introduced in 1938 to replace the Buffalo Nickel, featuring President Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his home Monticello on the reverse. Designed by Felix Schlag, this coin series has been in continuous production for over 80 years. The 1954 Jefferson Nickel was minted during the post-World War II era when the United States Mint returned to using the traditional copper-nickel composition after the wartime silver nickels of 1942-1945. Jefferson Nickels appeal to coin collectors of all levels, from beginners to advanced numismatists, due to their accessibility, historical significance, and the variety of mint marks and dates available. The 1954 issue is particularly interesting to collectors who focus on completing date and mint mark sets from the mid-20th century. These coins represent an important piece of American monetary history and are valued for their connection to one of America's Founding Fathers.
